Jarang saya jumpai rilisan gratis dalam format digital dari scene punk. Dunia netaudio (untuk menyebut musik yang diedarkan gratis melalui jaringan internet) secara umum didominasi oleh musik elektronik, avantgarde/eksperimental baik itu rock, metal maupun pop. Falsafah do-it-yourself, anti kemapanan, semangat gotong-royong dan anti kapitalisme yang tumbuh subur di scene punk seperti mengalami blunder menghadapi percepatan teknologi dan fenomena budaya yang menyertainya. Dalam konsep free-culture yang diilhami oleh para pengembang piranti lunak open-source yang kemudian melahirkan gerakan netaudio dan turunannya yaitu netlabel, paham kebebasan dalam sebuah rilisan gratis tidak serta merta dipahami hanya sebatas membagikan karya musik secara cuma-cuma, namun yang paling esensial adalah semangat untuk membebaskan sebuah karya untuk dinikmati, saling berbagi dan membuka peluang secara terbuka bagi siapa saja untuk mengolah kembali karya tersebut menjadi sebuah karya yang baru; Tentunya kemudian tidak untuk dijual dan di-klaim sepihak dalam cengkeraman copyright. Hal ini tentu saja beririsan langsung dengan azas-azas yang diyakini dalam scene punk.
Salah satu band yang saya temui yang memiliki pemahaman baik akan konsep free-culture adalah Noise Death Terror. Band D-beat/crust punk asal Copenhagen, Denmark ini membagikan gratis semua album rekamannya setelah seluruh rilisan versi vinyl mereka habis terjual. NDT memilih untuk membagikan gratis albumnya daripada pressing ulang. Bagi mereka, hasil keuntungan yang didapat dari penjualan vinyl yang telah menutup biaya produksi dan sisa laba yang dihasilkan adalah lebih dari cukup. Band ini menolak mentah-mentah penjualan musik digital di internet.
Berikut ini cuplikan statement mereka tentang hal ini:
"Music downloads are killing the scene for people who commodify and commercialise punk and make a living out if it. If that's what they want to do, that's their business (literally) and I won't villainise them for it. But when they claim that they're "trying to educate people that stealing mp3s is killing the entire scene right now" and describe selling mp3s on the internet as " total D.I.Y." (it would more accurate to describe it as "total bullshit" or "a load of bollocks"), whilst making a profit from selling our music without permission, then naturally we're going to react.

File sharing and free music downloads are one of the greatest threats to property and copyright that have ever occurred. To describe it as stealing is ridiculous. The true theft is when people build on other influences to write original music, and then define that as their own "intellectual property" which they then attempt to protect with copyright. Fuck that shit. People will keep sharing music for free, and we'll support them in this."

"After we've sold a couple thousand of each record & the labels have made their money back we'll put it online for free; fuck copyright, we built all our ideas on others' work, who built their ideas on others' work, etc. Property, intellectual or otherwise, is a load of shit."
